I have pretty cool nieces and nephews. Each has a unique personality (of course) and will undoubtedly think I’m the second coolest aunt ever (after my sister Alicia). Five of them share a single birth date and have been on their local news several times because of it. With their birthday cards, I wanted to make them similar enough that one card wasn’t obviously cooler than the others, but also try to match the cards to their distinct features.
I shall tell you a not-so secret: I really like kids cartoons, but only the good ones like Avatar, Phineas and Ferb, and My Little Ponies. I modeled all of the girls cards on ponies that I though most resembled them.
Kassidy’s card is Twilight Sparkle. She’s the leader of the ponies, and Kassidy is the most motherly of the kids. She loves to help around the house and is totally beautiful.
Kaydence’s card is Fluttershy’s cutie mark. Fluttery is the sweetest pony, but don’t cross her! Kasydence is pretty similar, but is mostly just as cute a button.
Kyndall is a scamp and reminds me of what I was like as a child. Her card is modeled after Rainbow Dash who is always on the move looking for an adventure.
The two boys are like most other little boys and love super heros. This make my job super easy of course :).
Rustin likes all superheros but one of his top favorites is Spider-Man. His card has lots of web motifs and is actually kind of har to look at for long periods of time without getting cross-eyes. Oops.
Ryder’s card was the last one I drew, and it turned out so awesome. His favorite is Batman, which is an excellent choice. I went retro blue and grey with the colors and made a Gotham homage. Why can’t I be this inspired all the time?!
I don’t think it’s ironic, but it certainly is annoying, I finished these cards two weeks before the kid’s birthdays but forgot to put them in the mail on time! The day after our birthday is not our birthday Auntie.
